The best sunscreen for a bald head

If you buy one product for your scalp, make it this. Here's what to look for in a daily SPF that protects without leaving your head greasy or chalky — and how to actually keep it on.

Updated July 20, 2026

This is the one I'll never skip. A shaved head takes direct sun with no cover, and you only realize how exposed it is the first time you burn the top of your own skull. A daily SPF fixes that — the trick is finding one you'll actually wear.

Why this is the non-negotiable one

A bald scalp takes direct overhead sun all day with no hair to shade it, which is why skin cancer of the scalp is more common in men, and why the scalp and hairline are among the most-missed spots when people apply sunscreen.[source] Daily SPF is also what prevents the sun spots and damage we cover in the sun spots guide.

What to look for

  • Broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher. Broad-spectrum means UVA and UVB; SPF 30+ is the dermatologist baseline, and higher doesn't hurt on skin this exposed.[source]
  • Water- and sweat-resistant. Your scalp sweats and you're often outdoors when you need it most. Water-resistant formulas hold up better — but still reapply.
  • A matte, non-greasy finish with no white cast. This is what makes you actually wear it daily, and a matte finish also cuts glare (see the shine guide). If a white cast bothers you, a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides blends in and adds protection against visible light.[source]
  • Reapply every two hours outdoors — and after swimming or heavy sweating. No formula lasts all day on one application.[source]

Picking by format

An honest note: this is criteria-led, not a hands-on lab test, and nothing here is a paid placement. Once we're in the affiliate programs these links go live and we'll name the specific formulas worth it. The right pick depends on how you'll use it:

  • Daily driver — a matte lotion. Your everyday base layer: most reliable, even coverage. A matte, broad-spectrum SPF for face and scalp is the one to build the habit around.
  • On the go — a stick. Fast, mess-free reapplication around the scalp and hairline without rubbing in a lotion. Keep one in your bag.
  • Long days outdoors — a water-resistant sport formula. For hikes, the beach, or yard work, where sweat and time demand something tougher.

Common questions

What SPF does a bald head need?

Broad-spectrum and at least SPF 30 — higher is better for skin that takes direct overhead sun all day. 'Broad-spectrum' matters as much as the number: it means protection from both UVA and UVB.

Do I need a special 'scalp' sunscreen?

Not really. A good broad-spectrum face or body sunscreen works fine on a scalp. What you actually want is a formula you'll happily wear every day — non-greasy, no heavy white cast, and comfortable — because the best sunscreen is the one you'll actually keep using.

Spray, lotion, or stick?

Lotion gives the most reliable, even coverage — make it your daily base. A stick is great for quick reapplication on the go and around the hairline. Sprays are convenient but it's easy to apply too little and miss spots, so use them as a top-up, not your only layer.

Will sunscreen make my head greasy or shiny?

It can if you pick a heavy, dewy formula. Look for one labeled matte, oil-free, or 'dry-touch.' A matte sunscreen does double duty — sun protection plus less glare.
